It seems that as the year comes to a close, the transition period between one season/holiday and the next gets shorter and shorter. I figured I couldn’t be the only one wanting to phase the fall decor from my home into a warm comfortable winter atmosphere…but what does that mean? Well, I’m here with four quick and simple ideas to help transition your home and give you that winter wonderland oasis.

1: Throw Pillows & Blankets

One of the easiest ways to add a cozy winter feel to your home is to bring in fresh, new throw blankets and pillows. This winter’s 2021’s colors are focusing on the dark and moody hues paired with pops of terracotta. Choose chunky knits, nubby chenille’s or cashmere with little to no pattern in colors of charcoal, mustard, mauve, pumpkin, or deep blue. Keep it functional as well as fashionable by choosing knits and cashmere that are thick and maintain heat better than cotton blends.  Throw blankets are a perfect way to provide an inviting textile element to your home (as well as keeping your tootsies toasty)! Whether you choose to go dark & moody or light and bright you can’t go wrong with a soft and cozy throw.

2: Candles/Fireplace

Candles are a quick and easy way to get your home feeling cozy. Scattering candles throughout one’s home can help with many different areas, such as: helping alleviate stress, reduce anxiety, and even provide a warm enveloping smell that can take you back to your favorite forest or grandma’s kitchen. My personal favorite type of candles are soy which are eco-friendly, have no toxins, and are generally made in smaller batches.

If your home doesn’t have a fireplace, candles can replicate that warm feeling you get from the flame. If your fireplace doesn’t work, try placing multiple candles with different heights and widths inside your fireplace to mimic a fire. If you don’t have a fireplace, try streaming a crackling fire onto your television for that cozy ambiance of a warm fire on a cold night.

3: Rugs & Window Coverings

Rugs and Window Coverings are another  fantastic way to bring texture and comfort to your home. This is also a functional way to keep your home insulated from the frigid Colorado winter. Did you know lighter colored rugs absorb less heat while thin rugs have a harder time staying warm? So think about a darker colored rug (to pair with your throw) with a thicker pile. And if you end up falling in love with a thinner rug try investing in a thick, felt rug pad.

And of course my specialty, window coverings! Efficient window coverings are one of the most effective and easiest ways to insulate your home from the cold winter nights. Cellular shades are one of the most energy efficient window coverings you can buy. They use a series of honeycomb-like cell pockets to trap air around your windows, keeping your rooms warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Layer the shades with drapes of cloth textiles and metal rods to finish the look with beautiful drapes!

4: Rearranging to accommodate your plants in the Winter

Now is also a great time to do small furniture rearrangements so indoor plants get the most of the winter light that’s available. Having plants in your home is a rejuvenating experience year round, but especially during winter months, the benefits of indoor plants are tenfold. And making small furniture changes has been linked to elevating one’s mood and providing a revitalizing feeling! When everything’s gray, barren and snow covered outside, your home can still be full of life.

Here’s to a beautiful and warm winter!
